Description
The boat was built and completed in southern California and launched in November 2021. The mast, rigging and sails arrived in March 2022, just missing the first Globe 5.80 transat. In October 2023, Sunbear was shipped to Portugal in a container. The vessel was reassembled and rigged for the 600 nm qualifier from Lagos, Portugal to Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Sunbear then completed the 3000 nm trans-Atlantic race to Antigua earning a 2nd place finish. The completion of the race fulfilled the seller's 3-year bucket list item to build and sail for this adventure race. The vessel is in transit to Florida for a new owner to realize their dream. Sunbear will have journeyed over 5000 nm when she reaches Florida, proving her blue water capabilities.
Sunbear was dubbed the “Rolls Royce” of the 5.80 fleet by fellow builders, her fit and finish is top notch. Save time and money by purchasing Sunbear and start accruing your qualifying sea miles for the 2024 Globe 5.80 transat.
Sunbear is 100% class compliant and class registered. Needing only an approved medical kit and your choice of lifejacket/harness, she is ready for sea again. All build pictures, blueprints, and class documentation will be provided electronically with purchase of the boat.

The vessel name is a blend of the seller's dad's old business "Sunshine Semiconductor'', and his signature bright yellow stationary. The state the boat was built in, California, hence the grizzly bear and sun logo. Sun bears are the smallest members of the actual bear family, roaming southeast Asia, and ultimately a fitting name for this mini ocean cruiser.

Marcy was born in upstate New York, then moved to Jacksonville, FL, where she fell in love with the beach and beach lifeâ¦until Jaws came out and she saw it at the drive-in with her parents. Her childhood took her back the upstate New York, where she grew up a âLake Girlâ boating aboard a 1977 family-owned Bayliner Liberty on Seneca Lake. Summers were spent on Devilâs Lake, in the Frontenac Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. Her experience then revolved around power boats and canoes, and she was always on the water enjoying the fresh air, exploring, fishing, swimming and basking in the camaraderie that comes with making friends on the water. While gathering drinking water and provisions in Westport, Ontario, on these summer trips, she was always fascinated with the cruisers that were docked on Upper Rideau Lake. Seeing the names and ports of call was always the highlight of these visits to town. Marcy has the sea in her veins, and naturally evolved to enjoy sailing on bluewater cruising boats as an adult. Â
Marcy holds a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of New York and an MS in Business Management from Northern Illinois University. She worked for 15 years as a Business Engineering Manager for UPS, and 11 years in Finance & Operations in public administration, while raising her two daughters just outside of Chicago. In 2020, Marcy answered the call of the sea and travelled to Florida to be one of the three founders of Sunshine Cruising Yachtsâan adventure that has reconnected her with the outdoors and given her a new love and appreciation for the sea and the people who travel it.Â
She earned the title of âTop Salespersonâ for SCY for four years in a row, and continues to be a team leader and integral part of the crew.Â
She covers all parts of the globe, specializing in Florida, Puerto Rico, & the Caribbean.
Both of her girls have now graduated college, and are excited to visit their mom in Florida and beyond.Â
