Joe O' Sullivan
Joe has been drawn to the water all his life. He grew up in Ireland and moved to the US in 1994. As a kid in Ireland, he wind-surfed and kayaked, and later got into scuba diving. He became a scuba diving instructor in 2000. Although he had been around sailboats for years, the sailing bug was really planted in 1994 when he heard stories from a friend sailing the Caribbean and island hopping with a captained charter. In 2005, he bought his first boat for $500 and had it for about a year. Later, in 2008 he bought a Boston Whaler to buzz around the Chesapeake Bay and then in 2009, bought his first sailboat, a 1987 Catalina 22. In 2012 he started living aboard and since then has lived aboard a 1975 C&C 26, a 1977 Hunter 30, and a 1979 Irwin 37 center cockpit ketch rig. He currently lives aboard a 1981 Morgan Out Island 41, which also doubles as his pet project and his "Maritime Dream."
Joe holds a Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering from University College Cork in Ireland and a Master of Engineering in ocean engineering from University of California at Berkeley. In Jan 2019, he retired from the US Navy after 24 years of service.
